Racial Discrimination
Racial discrimination involves targeting an individual due to race or characteristics that are associated with race (hair, skin color, facial features, etc.). It occurs due to overt prejudice, hostility, or negative feelings held by an individual or group. Even today people are treated unequally based on the overt bias they have towards race.
Racial discrimination often occurs in forms of subtle differential treatment. It can only be identified if all the circumstances are examined, such as contrasting how one person was treated versus others in a comparable situation.
Racial comments can be made. This is not, however, is not a direct source of subtle discrimination. To identify racial discrimination, it must be the reason for why a particular treatment was received. Some examples of subtle discrimination in NationStates can be turning away an application due to race, not promoting someone in a region due to race, and etc.
Signs of Racial Discrimination
- Statements that are untrue or stereotyping and implicitly racist statements
- Symbols of hate, such as the Confederate flag
- Threats of physical harm or death
- Graphic representations / actual images of dead bodies
- A non-existent, contradictory, or changing explanation for why someone was targeted
- The situation unfolds differently than if the person had been White
- Deviations from normal practices or practices carried in an unprofessional manner
